Reflective Analysis on "The Following" - Freya Beck

Writing

When writing the story in our film I had to focus on many different things. I had to take into count the camera angles we would use that would capture the moments best, I also had to think of others acting abilities. In addition to this I also had to think about a story line that isn't to common, and interesting. After figuring out the story I then worked out what audience this would appeal to. Over all I am happy with the story line, I believe the thriller will interest many people and the camera angles we will use will benefit us tremendously.

Location

I decided to film at my house as the area is, of course, extremely familiar to me. This puts us at an advantage as I know where the camera could sit best in order to get the best shot. This was also a benefit as I know the lighting in my house at different parts of the day, I know certain areas are darker than others. Knowing this allowed us to use a number of low key lighting and we were able to change the audiences mood just by using different lighting techniques. Over all I am happy with our location as I know that on screen each scene will look interesting.

Producer

As producer I was in charge of the entire film. I had to manage people and equipment and organise time and dates which everyone could attend to. I also picked 3 more members to add to our team as co-editors and actors. When choosing our cast I had go through everyone I know who is good at different jobs. I decided that I needed a co-editor as I wanted an outsiders opinion on the film, I find that I will always favour scenes that I have produced where as others may not, and I have to go by the audiences opinion. I decided that I wanted actors because this will then enable us to film each scene and look at it from different angles in order to decide which shot best suits the scene. Over all I am happy with each team member and the running of the film.

Editor

I was extremely new to the editing programme so I got a co-editor to teach me what each transition does. Whilst teaching me he advised me on which scene he preferred and which camera angle was best. I edited the film, cutting down clips and lengthening the music. I found it hard a t first but after I got used to each button I was able to edit easily.

Sound Effect

Our film doesn't include any talking so I decided to keep the natural sound of wind and birds that were present when we filmed. I then decided to add some music in the background. The music is a slow and dark sound that gets louder as the clip goes on. We have a scene in  our films where a girl in hiding under the covers and the camera is in a first person view of the situation. For the sound I decided to fade out the music and  place a sound effect of a girl breathing heavily into the clip. I found that this built up the tension, foreshadowing that something bad is about to happen. I then added a loud bang at the end and faded into the blackout. Over all I was extremely happy with the sound in our clip.

Over all

In conclusion I was extremely happy with our film, I believe it is perfect for our audience. The camera angles, plot, sound and editing turned out to be amazing and I was extremely proud of our team. If I was to do this again I would make our film longer.
